I agree with your overarching theme that American travelers should be thoughtful about visiting Europe. Definitely factor in summer weather when picking your locations and the "shoulder season" seems to be disappearing. I recommend traveling off-season if you can, but realize that option is not available for many Americans. I visited Europe during Thanksgiving week the past two years and had a blast both times.
